Reading Comprehension Strategies

Various comprehension strategies are used by the teachers to help their students understand the lessons in a better way. The techniques used can be direct or indirect. The teachers even use the techniques that come in the form of the games, which actually help the students understand the lessons much better. The techniques used can depend on the students of the class, their capability to understand, their age and the complexity of the lessons. Making the students interested to the techniques is a major challenge for the teachers. The most common form of the strategies used is the reading comprehension technique. But, there are other ways too. These Reading Comprehension Strategies or techniques can actually help you develop your vocabulary and the analysis skills.

Reading Comprehension Strategies

Role Playing:

Role playing is the most enjoyed concept of comprehension reading. The students not only enjoy this, but they get a better perspective of the lesson or concept that is taught. The reading material can be interpreted in a unique and individual way when this technique is used. But, this strategy does not come handy in all the cases. For a few topics that involves dissection for instance, cannot be handled with role playing. When the text has a plot and characters, then role playing can be found efficient.

Query and Response:

It is possible to check if someone has understood a concept only when that person is able to answer a few questions related to the text. When a lesson is completed many teachers prefer going for a test of question and answers. Including open and close ended questions can be the best choice. The teachers can find the understanding levels of the student pertaining to the particular text. Choosing questions for specific concepts is necessary. Close ended questions, where only positive or negative answers can be used should be used when there is no need to elaborate the answer. Open ended questions can be used when an elaborate answer is required. For instance, when testing on the lesson about dinosaurs, the teacher can ask, do the dinosaur live now, which is a closed ended question. The students need not elaborate the answer here, and simply go with “No”. What are the different reasons predicted for the extinction of dinosaurs is an open ended questions, where much has to be said on the topic.

Using the Experience:

Most of the times, using the knowledge that has been acquired already is involved. You need to be up to date with the information. For this the prior experience should be counted. Making connections is required.

How chunking can be used?

Take a regular text passage. Using a simple passage to suit the age of the students is perfect to begin with. Break the passage into smaller portions. Let the students read the passage and the teacher should monitor ask the students questions, to find how much the children have understood. Try this for many times, and let the students start using this strategy. One of the effective reading comprehension strategies, chunking lets the students understand a concept in bits. The students should be asked to chunk the texts themselves and then to jot down the questions themselves. They can show a great extent of understanding when they are used to chunking.

Listening:

When a student has to understand any text or concept, first he or she should listen properly. They should be asked to listen when someone reads, or they should be made to read along. Spoken information is understood in a better way compared with the text that is being read.

Visualize:

The best way to make the students understand is visualizing. This is one of the Reading Comprehension Strategies that is accepted and successfully used across the globe. Children usually understand concepts when they see a visual representation. You can get it done in various ways. You can ask a part of students to enact the scenario. This works well for the text with the story plot and characters. If you want to make students understand a text like dissection then digitalized visuals can help a lot. Choosing based on the needs can bring good results.
